DON'T EVEN BUY IT!
REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF HHW YOU
GENERATE
- First, use the least hazardous product available which can do the job. For example, use latex paint rather than solvent-based paint, or contact your County Extension office to learn about implementing companion planting to avoid the use of pesticides. Use common household products such as baking soda and vinegar in recipes to make your own cleaning procudts. (Contact AVCOG fpor assistance.)
- Look at product labels before buying; products labeled Warning or Caution are less hazardous than those labeled Danger or Poison.
- Buy only the amount of a hazardous product that you need. Products often become less effective as they age. Quantity buying is not an advantage with hazardous chemicals when you consider the cost of proper disposal.
- Use up materials for their intended purposes according to label directions whenever possible. Apply a second coat of paint or use fro touch up to eliminate waste.
- Offer materials for which you no longer have a use to friends or family or donate to a charitable organization which can use them.
- Some materials should not be used; these include paints containing lead or mercury, banned pesticides such as 2,4,5-T, aldrin, chlordane, DDT, dieldrin, lindane, and silvex and preservatives such as pentachlorophenol. Bring these to the HHW collection.
